Besakih Temple is a temple complex located in Besakih Village, Rendang District, Karangasem Regency, which is 52.1 km from Renon. Besakih Temple is on the western slopes of Mount Agung, the highest mountain in Bali.
The location of Besakih Temple was deliberately chosen in a village that is considered sacred because of its high location, called Hulundang Basukih which later became Besakih Village. The name Besakih is taken from Sanskrit, wasuki or in Old Javanese basuki which means safe.
Apart from that, the name Besakih Temple is also based on the mythology of the Basuki Dragon as a balance to Mount Mandara. The Besakih Temple complex consists of 1 central temple (Penataran Agung Besakih Temple) and 18 companion temples (1 Basukian Temple and 17 other temples). It is called the mother of temple because Besakih Temple is the center of activity for all the temples in Bali
Besakih Temple was built in 1284 by Rsi Markandeya who was a Hindu religious leader of Indian descent. Rsi Markandeya built Besakih Temple because he heard supernatural sounds while meditating on the Dieng Plateau. He and his followers even cut through the forests in Java to get to the island of Bali. It is said that at that time there was no Bali Strait like there is now, because the island of Java and Bali were still one and not separated by the sea. Because the islands that we now call Java and Bali are so long, this island was given the name Dawa Island, which means long island.
The many relics of the megalithic era, such as menhirs, stone thrones, pyramid terrace structures found in the Besakih Temple complex, show that as a sacred place, it seems that Besakih originates from a very old era, long before the influence of Hinduism. Currently, Besakih Temple, apart from being a place of worship for Hindus, is also a tourist attraction because it has a number of attractions, apart from its natural beauty, it is also close to several tourist attractions that are currently popular in Bali, such as the Edelweiss Flower Park, Taman Jinja Bali (Taman This unique uses a Japanese-style concept)
Currently the Besakih Temple area is in the structuring stage. The arrangement was carried out as an effort to protect the Pura Agung Besakih cultural heritage area, which is a world-class tourist destination. It often happens that when there is a large ceremony at Besakih Temple, there will be very many visitors to worship, so to anticipate this, different entry and exit routes are made, so that there is no buildup, including road circulation for vehicles will be regulated. The arrangement of the Agung Besakih Temple was carried out by the PUPR Ministry through the Directorate General of Human Settlements with a design and build mechanism covering the Manik Mas Area in the form of a 4-story parking building covering an area of 55,201 m2 with a capacity of 66 buses, 1,369 cars, 18 large kiosks, and 12 small kiosk units. Then the arrangement of the Bencingah Area took the form of building 358 stalls for traders with a total building area of 7,587 m2 including 196 large stalls (measuring 4 m x 6 m) and 162 small stalls (measuring 2.5 m x 3 m). It is targeted that construction will be completed by the end of 2022 and can be used by the community in 2023.
